Farming Your Accounts WON’T Help You GROW!

I get calls all the time from sales managers asking the same question: “How do I get my reps to prospect more?”

It’s SUCH a common problem. Reps have tons of success, become great account managers, and then after awhile, they forget to chase NEW accounts. I fell into this trap myself after my first baby. I was busy, my existing customers that I’d worked so hard to get kept me afloat… until one day I looked at my funnel and thought: “Yikes! If I don’t get moving, I won’t even hit quota this year!”

So I got back out there. I prospected aggressively. Within a month, after many emails, calls and drop-ins, my funnel was healthy again. Because here’s the truth: PROSPECTING WORKS. When you put yourself out there (and you do it right!), it’s only a matter of time before things fall into place. Think of it like this: if you take the stairs instead of the elevator on a daily basis, you add about 50,000 steps a year. Small daily habits add up, ESPECIALLY in sales. If you call 10 new customers a day, how many new accounts will you have by the end of the year?

Growth doesn’t come from coasting on old accounts. It comes from the small habits that compound over time. A players prospect and grow. B players coast. What kind of player does your manager want you to be? And more importantly, what kind of player do YOU want you to be?
