Windows of Opportunity Can be Small. Seize Them!

I was picking up a cake for my daughter’s birthday recently and was told to wait until 11:00, but I accidentally got there too early, so I waited the last 15 minutes in my car, catching up on emails and texts. Suddenly, I felt my entire car shift. I looked up and the girl in the car next to me had flung her door open and it was resting against mine. At first I was shocked, but she didn’t even seem to notice. I had about 1,000 things waiting for me at home: getting ready for my daughter’s 18th birthday, packing for a big trip to Alaska, and preparing for her senior pictures. I did NOT have time for a big fight about a door ding. 
 
Should I confront her and let her know that she door-dinged me and we could inspect the damage together? 
 
The girl closed her door and didn’t look one bit worried, or even look at my car or hers, so I convinced myself I was overreacting. I watched her walk away.
 
I went into the bakery, picked up the cake and on the way out, I inspected my car. There was a tiny black smudge of paint and MAYBE a little dent. I couldn’t tell with my dirty white car. I called my mom. She assured me OF COURSE I should have confronted her and was it too late? I walked around the shops, trying to find her, but there were too many. I had lost my opportunity to talk to her. I could have waited for her to come out, but it could be hours. I left her a note, explaining what happened and asked her to call me. She didn’t.
 
Life gives us all kinds of opportunities. Chances to shine in front of a boss. To meet new people. To call that prospect back quickly, even if you’re swamped. To hire that perfect person, before they find a better opportunity.
 
Take the opportunity before it’s too late. The window can be very, very small.
