Marketing Doesn’t Win Deals - Sales Does.
Marketing team: “We just rolled out a new promo and talking points to go with it. We have some big goals around this, so make sure you’re pushing it. Hard.”
Sales team: “Oh yeah, I saw that… but I feel like it might need a few tweaks. I’m not sure those are really the hot buttons customers care about.”
Marketing team: “Just go with it. It’s done.”
Sound familiar?
Here’s the problem: promos and talking points written by people who’ve never sold a thing usually sound like… well, something customers don’t care about.
I remember testing one of those “approved” scripts years ago.
It told me to open every call with:
👉 “Hi [Name], I’m calling to fill you in on an exciting new promotion we have.”
By the third call, I realized something: every single person I called was annoyed.
One even said, “I don’t even know if I want to buy what you’re selling — why would I care about a promo?”
Yes, marketing and sales both matter. Marketing builds awareness. They build strategy.
But sales builds relationships.
Work together as a team — but don’t let people who’ve never sold tell you what matters to customers.
Trust yourself. YOU know what matters. You’re with them every single day.
